About the tool

What is Docker?

Docker is a platform for packaging applications and their dependencies into containers — isolated units that run on a shared operating system kernel. It solves the problem of software behaving differently across development, testing and production environments, since a container image carries the same libraries and configuration wherever it runs. Compared with full virtual machines, containers start faster and use fewer resources, which makes them practical for running many services on one host.

A short history of Docker

Docker was created by Solomon Hykes and first released in 2013, initially as an internal project at the PaaS company that later became Docker, Inc. It built on existing Linux kernel features such as namespaces and cgroups, but added an image format, a build file and a registry that made containers straightforward to share. The core engine was later moved into the Moby open source project on GitHub, and the runtime and image specifications became the basis of wider industry standards; Docker itself is written in Go.

What is Docker used for?

At work Docker is used to build images for services, run local development environments, and ship applications through automated pipelines to servers or cloud platforms. In Lithuanian job ads it appears most often in Backend, DevOps and cloud, Data and AI and Full-stack roles, usually alongside Kubernetes for orchestration, CI/CD tooling, Git and Linux. It is also commonly listed with Python, SQL and MySQL, and increasingly in AI-related positions where models and data services are packaged as containers.

The Lithuanian market today

Right now Docker is asked for in 72 IT jobs in Lithuania (12 % of all). Most of them are in Backend and DevOps and cloud. It is most often asked for together with Kubernetes, CI/CD, AI. The median of the jobs that state a salary is 4 600 € gross per month.
